Celestine Atieno Oliewo from Kenya recently completed her Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Ghana. For her studies she received a MasterCard Foundation scholarship.
The reason Celestine decided to join the Africademics Scholarship Ambassador Programme is that she was inspired by Prof Elsie Kaufmann, who made her realize the impact a scholarship could have not only on an individual but also a country’s educational system. Prof Elsie Kaufmann shared her journey with Celestine, explained how securing a scholarship at a young age and being exposed to a different style of teaching really broadened her perspective.
This made Celestine realise, that if we had more Prof Elsie’s in Africa, we would be on the road to greater things! Another reason she joined the Ambassador Programme is that she would love to have the opportunity to grow her personal and professional skills while supporting and mentoring interested persons in their scholarship applications.
In 10 years’ time, Celestine sees herself as a well-established career woman, making an impact on society. A fun fact about Celestine is that she loves trying out new ideas and DIY projects.

The Scholarship Ambassador Programme
Through the Scholarship Ambassador Programme Africademics trains volunteers from across Africa to become scholarship advisors and mentors. Ambassadors complete a 4-month online course with virtual lectures, case studies and additional activities. Once they have successfully graduated, our Scholarship Ambassadors offer personal support, advice and mentorship for scholarship seekers and applicants in and from Africa.
Our 2022 Ambassador cohort started their training in April 2022 and we are thrilled to have over 90 students and scholars from across the African continent on board this year. In 2021, we welcomed our first cohort of 30 Scholarship Ambassadors who completed their training in November 2021. They now offer free scholarship consultations, mentorship and application assistance for scholarship seekers in and from Africa on a regular basis.
