The 2022 Scholarship Ambassador Programme!

By Lena Gronbach

Are you a student, recent graduate, researcher or lecturer from an African country? Are you a beneficiary or alumni of a scholarship or fellowship programme? Are you fluent in English and keen to learn about scholarships and mentoring in a 4-month online course? Are you passionate about creating and sharing educational opportunities and scholarships and keen to join our global community of volunteers and Scholarship Ambassadors?

Then apply today and join the Africademics Scholarship Ambassador Programme!

How does the Ambassador Programme work?

The programme is open to individuals in and from Africa who are either currently in receipt of a scholarship or fellowship or have received scholarship funding in the past. Academic staff and early career researchers with demonstrated experience in the field of scholarships and academic funding (e.g. through working in a postgraduate funding office) are also eligible to apply.

You can submit your application via this online form until 15 March 2022. Applications will close at midnight (GMT+2) and successful applicants will be informed by 25 March. NB: Please make sure to read the Scholarship Ambassador info document before submitting your application!

The 30 selected participants will be invited to participate in a virtual kick-off meeting which will take place in the first week of April. Over the next four months, participants will receive comprehensive scholarship training which will prepare them for their role as volunteer scholarship advisors and mentors.

The Ambassador training will take place via bi-weekly online workshops and assignments. After completing the training, participants will work on a final assignment which will consist in preparing and conducting a personal scholarship consultation for a scholarship seeker or applicant.

Once you have graduated, you will join our team of Scholarship Ambassadors. In your role as Africademics Scholarship Ambassador, you will offer personal support to students and prospective scholarship applicants. You will also be invited to join our global Alumni Network, to become a mentor for future Ambassadors, or to join our team as a coordinator or local representative.

Application Requirements

You should be a student, recent graduate, early-career researcher or academic staff member from an African country. You must either currently be in receipt of a scholarship or fellowship or have received a scholarship or fellowship in the past. The programme will be conducted in English, so applicants must have a good command of the English language.

As the lectures, workshops and discussions will take place online, it is vital that you have regular and stable internet access and that you are able to watch the tutorial videos, send and receive emails, and participate in occasional Zoom meetings. The programme will take place over a period of 4 months (plus an additional 2-4 weeks for your final case study) and participants are expected to participate in the full duration of the programme.

The programme is offered free of charge.

Benefits

Our 4-month Ambassador training will provide you with the necessary tools and knowledge to find and apply for scholarships and to support others in doing so. The course will cover different types of scholarships, eligibility criteria, the application process, studying abroad, and important tips and guidelines for the application and preparation process. You will learn how to guide and advise others in their scholarship journey and how to mentor them in the process of searching and applying for scholarships and other opportunities.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop your personal and professional skills in areas such as communication, mentoring, writing and leadership. Last but not least, you will join a vibrant community of like-minded young leaders from Africa and beyond, and will gain access to the global Africademics network.

Every Ambassador who has successfully completed the 4-month Ambassador Training Programme, as well as the final case study, will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the programme cycle. This will be conditional on active participation in the bi-weekly virtual lectures, submitting assignments, participating in discussions, and submitting feedback in a timely and reliable manner.

Please note that Africademics is a non-profit organization and we are therefore not in a position to offer financial compensation to participants of the Africademcs Ambassador Programme.
