Meet our Ambassador: Joanne A. Ogunah

Joanne Atieno Ogunah from Kenya is the Chair of the Physical Sciences Department, and a lecturer of Physical and Applied Chemistry, at the University of Embu in Kenya. She holds a PhD and Master’s degree in Chemistry from Maseno University, Kenya.

Joanne has been the recipient of National Research Fund (NRF) postgraduate funding, a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Postgraduate support grant, and an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grant for a young researcher short research stay in Germany.

She is a member of the following professional bodies: Kenya Chemical Society (KCS), The Chemical Weapons Convention Coalition (under the UN Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)) and the Organization of Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).

Joanne joined the Africademics Scholarship Ambassador Programme because when she was introduced to the world of scholarships and grants by her supervisor after her Master’s course work, it had such a big influence on her life that she would like to offer the same platform to other young people who may find themselves in the same situation she was in. She believes that being an Africademics Scholarship Ambassador will give her the platform, skills, and knowledge she needs to advance her desire to give back to society.

In 10 years’ time, Joanne aims to be a full professor of Chemistry and have her own research laboratory full of research students of all levels. Something people might not know about Joanne is that even though she is an extrovert, she also loves her own company, and therefore enjoys taking very long countryside drives by herself.

Welcome to the Africademics Ambassador Programme, Joanne!

The Scholarship Ambassador Programme

Through the Scholarship Ambassador Programme Africademics trains volunteers from across Africa to become scholarship advisors and mentors. Ambassadors complete a 4-month online course with virtual lectures, case studies and additional activities. Once they have successfully graduated, our Scholarship Ambassadors offer personal support, advice and mentorship for scholarship seekers and applicants in and from Africa.

Our 2022 Ambassador cohort started their training in April 2022 and we are thrilled to have over 90 students and scholars from across the African continent on board this year. In 2021, we welcomed our first cohort of 30 Scholarship Ambassadors who completed their training in November 2021. They now offer free scholarship consultations, mentorship and application assistance for scholarship seekers in and from Africa on a regular basis.

Meet our team of Scholarship Ambassadors here and let us know via our contact form if you would like to book a personal consultation with one of them!
