What is Africademics?
Africademics, founded in 2019, is a career platform for students and early career researchers in and from Africa. We publish information about scholarships, training courses, career development and other academic opportunities for African scholars via our Facebook page, Twitter and our website. In January 2020, we launched our rapidly growing volunteer network and are currently reaching out to universities, research institutions and other potential partners across Africa.
Our Mission and Vision
Africademics aims to become the central information hub for career advice, funding opportunities and networking for African students and early career researchers. By providing funding information, career advice, inspiration and resources, we support and empower Africa’s future leaders, both within and outside of academia. Our main goals is to address the information gap with regard to academic opportunities, and to create a community of like-minded young scholars from all corners of the continent.
Who is behind Africademics?
Africademics was founded by Lena Gronbach, a PhD student at the University of Cape Town. After having worked in youth exchange, tourism, translation, event management and academia, she decided to launch her own social business and pursue her passion: expanding access to tertiary education across Africa and helping other young scholars realize their dreams. She is supported by a growing network of volunteers who are equally passionate about the vision and mission of Africademics.
The Africademics Volunteer Network
Launched in January 2020, our rapidly growing volunteer network consists of close to 150 students, researchers, professionals and supporters from 30 African countries. Our volunteers assist us in identifying and sharing funding opportunities, liaising with universities and partners, creating content for our blog and social media channels, and spreading the word about the Africademics movement. The aim of our volunteer network is to build an inclusive and supportive community for students and scholars in and from Africa and to empower our members through mutual support and educational opportunities.
Career Coaching and Scholarship Support Service
Our career coaching and scholarship support service for students and early career researchers will be launched in late 2020. It will provide personal advice and career guidance, help students identify scholarships and funding opportunities that meet their needs and qualifications, and assist them with the application and preparation process. More information will be shared in mid-2020, so watch this space!
