We are thrilled to welcome 35 newly qualified Scholarship Ambassadors to our growing team of scholarship mentors and to celebrate their graduation – watch the recording here!
This year’s edition of our Scholarship Ambassador Programme took place in collaboration with the African Federation of Optometry Students (AFOS), giving AFOS members the opportunity to complete our 10-week digital training course. Over 200 AFOS members applied for the programme and we are incredibly proud of our 35 new graduates!
During our virtual, self-paced training course, our participants acquired the following skills and insights:
- Distinguish between different types of scholarships, fellowships, grants and funders
- Finding reliable and up-to-date scholarship and funding information
- Identifying and avoiding scholarship scams
- Understanding and navigating scholarship eligibility criteria
- Preparing for international studies and funding opportunities
- Creating a successful scholarship application
- Tracking scholarships and the corresponding application process
- Mentoring others in their scholarship journey.
We celebrated their achievements in a virtual graduation ceremony on Saturday, 8 November, with a keynote speech by no other than Dr Darryl Glover, as well as speeches by AFOS leaders and Africademics. In addition, our participants had the opportunity to share feedback on their learning experience, and share how their participation in the programme has impacted them.

Our new Scholarship Ambassadors are now ready to put their skills and knowledge into practice, and to start mentoring other students and graduates in their scholarship journey.
The first call for scholarship mentees will be open to registered AFOS members, and will go out this coming week – so don’t miss out and join AFOS in order to qualify, if you are not a member yet!
