Please tell us a bit about yourself!
I am an enthusiastic and motivated team player with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities. I enjoy building relationships and working with people, and in my capacity as a team leader in my writing group, I am committed to their growth and to influencing them to bring their best. In my free time I enjoy listening to Christian music and watching movies. In 10 years, I see myself as an established researcher with a good h index. I want to continue working in a collaborative environment where I can thrive and also influence others to thrive. I hope to lead others in reaching their own career goals and provide a launching pad for postgraduate scholarship seekers.
What is your personal experience with scholarships and fellowships?
I received funding through the Thuthuka programme in South Africa from 2016 to 2018.
How did you experience the Africademics Scholarship Ambassador Programme?
My passion to help others achieve their dreams of securing funding for postgraduate studies made me apply to be an Africademics Scholarship Ambassador. A major learning experience and insight I took away from the programme was Module 4, in which we learned to understand and navigate eligibility criteria for scholarships. I gained insight and understanding of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ eligibility criteria and how one can wiggle through the soft criteria to have a safe landing and successfully apply for a scholarship. I really enjoy building relationships, so the programme afforded me the opportunity to meet with new people from different backgrounds.
What was it like to become a Scholarship Mentor?
I have two mentees during my first mentoring round. I was able to guide one of my mentees in applying for the AAUW (American Association of University Women ) scholarship and she is preparing to submit another scholarship application by January/February 2024. She has already been admitted to study Public Health at the University of Illinois in the United States and is waiting for her visa interview to apply for her study permit.
With my second mentee we are still in the process of finding suitable scholarship opportunities and applying for university admission. He recently moved to the UK with a work visa and is changing his options to securing an online scholarship for distance study. We are constantly communicating and it has been a great experience to assist him in his educational journey.
Why would you recommend the Scholarship Ambassador Programme to others?
The programme provides the opportunity to be a volunteer and also to be trained and equipped with skills and tools for mentoring postgraduate scholarship applicants, and for your own scholarship search.
