Uchechukwu Levi Osuagwu from Nigeria is a Research Fellow at the Translational Health Research Institute (THRI) and the founder of the Center for Eye Care and Public Health Intervention Initiative (CEPHII). He is an academic staff member at the School of Medicine at Western Sydney University in New South Wales and a former president of The Optical Society QUT student chapter where he led the chapter to international recognition.
He holds a Master’s degree in Ocular Health from Aston University in Birmingham, UK, as well as a PhD in Myopia (Public Health) from Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. Uchechukwu has been the recipient of many research grants, of which the most recent ones are the Western Sydney Research Fellowship Award, Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA) grant, and the TETFUND NRF research grant, just to name a few.
He joined the Africademics Scholarship Ambassador Programme because he is motivated to share his own scholarship experiences with aspiring young people and teach them how to become successful in their applications. He believes that becoming an Ambassador will equip him with the skills needed to give accurate advice and provide factual information to aspiring Africans.
As a convener of two research groups, he motivates members to utilise any opportunity to build capacity in research and guide African students on their career paths. Upon completion of the Ambassador training programme, Uchechukwu believes that he will be better placed to continue performing these roles and learn from the diversity of other Ambassadors in the programme through shared experiences.
In 10 years’ time Uchechukwu aims to be the Chair of an African research group and run an African journal that will publish quality research projects. An interesting fact about him is that he loves playing soccer.
Welcome to the Africademics Ambassador Programme, Uchechukwu!
The Scholarship Ambassador Programme
Through the Scholarship Ambassador Programme Africademics trains volunteers from across Africa to become scholarship advisors and mentors. Ambassadors complete a 4-month online course with virtual lectures, case studies and additional activities. Once they have successfully graduated, our Scholarship Ambassadors offer personal support, advice and mentorship for scholarship seekers and applicants in and from Africa.
Our 2022 Ambassador cohort started their training in April 2022 and we are thrilled to have over 90 students and scholars from across the African continent on board this year. In 2021, we welcomed our first cohort of 30 Scholarship Ambassadors who completed their training in November 2021. They now offer free scholarship consultations, mentorship and application assistance for scholarship seekers in and from Africa on a regular basis.
Meet our team of Scholarship Ambassadors here and let us know via our contact form if you would like to book a personal consultation with one of them!
