Oluwamuyiwa Ogunkoya from Nigeria is a medical laboratory intern at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Lagos in Nigeria and has been awarded the Lagos State Indigene Scholarship. He is also an alumnus of the Millennium Fellowship, a semester-long program supported by United Nations Academic Impact, as well as an alumnus of the Arts in Medicine fellowship, another semester-long fellowship that employs tools in the medical humanities and arts to alleviate the pains of individuals and improve overall health outcomes.
Oluwamuyiwa pioneered a peer-peer mentoring program in his student association NIMELSSA (Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association), University of Lagos. Under this mentoring program, students get mentored by an senior individual on academic development, career development, and building social skills. They also organize learning sessions with the alumni to further facilitate students learning process, allowing them to improve their skills, develop their potential and eventually be the professionals they wish to be.
The NIMELSSA mentoring programme has been running for three years and they hope to sustain it for many years to come. The programme, as well as other social impact activities he is involved in, earned Oluwamuyiwa the award for being the most influential student in his association. He, therefore joined the Africademics Scholarship Ambassador Programme because he believes this will allow him to gain relevant knowledge and skills that he can pass on to his junior colleagues as part of the efforts of his mentoring program and influence the lives of those in his community positively.
In 10 years’ time, Oluwamuyiwa aims to be a medical laboratory scientist practising as a public health specialist with a particular focus on molecular laboratory testing, and an author of books, fiction and non-fiction, about medically related topics. An interesting fact about Oluwamuyiwa is that he loves to play chess.
Welcome to the Africademics Ambassador Programme, Oluwamuyiwa !
The Scholarship Ambassador Programme
Through the Scholarship Ambassador Programme Africademics trains volunteers from across Africa to become scholarship advisors and mentors. Ambassadors complete a 4-month online course with virtual lectures, case studies and additional activities. Once they have successfully graduated, our Scholarship Ambassadors offer personal support, advice and mentorship for scholarship seekers and applicants in and from Africa.
Our 2022 Ambassador cohort started their training in April 2022 and we are thrilled to have over 90 students and scholars from across the African continent on board this year. In 2021, we welcomed our first cohort of 30 Scholarship Ambassadors who completed their training in November 2021. They now offer free scholarship consultations, mentorship and application assistance for scholarship seekers in and from Africa on a regular basis.
Meet our team of Scholarship Ambassadors here and let us know via our contact form if you would like to book a personal consultation with one of them!
